Cardiac and Pulmonary Rehab

Clarinda Regional Health Center (CRHC) has some terrific cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs aimed at getting patients back to normal activities after they have suffered an “event” as quickly and safely as possible. We have several programs which combine monitored exercise with education that will help them learn from their “event,” such as heart attacks, cardiac surgery, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and more. Cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation programs include:

Cardiac Rehab

This Rehab Program is supervised by a registered nurse who monitors your heart activity during exercise and perform education on risk factors for heart disease. During the program your exercise level with increase over time and strengthen your heart. Talk to your doctor about qualifications for Cardiac Rehabilitation.


PHASE II: The second phase is an exercise program after hospital discharge for those who have experienced a heart attack, had surgery or other heart related conditions.


PHASE III: This last phase is a wellness program for those who have completed the second phase. The exercise program is supervised by our cardiac rehab personnel and includes personal instruction. There is a small fee for this service, as it isn’t covered by medical insurance.

  • What is Cardiac Rehabilitation?

    This is an outpatient service that is prescribed by a medical provider after a cardic event. The program combines exercise training and education.  The end goal for Cardiac Rehab is to improve your recovery and get you back to your regular activities. Exercise programs and education is customized for every patient. Cardiac Rehabilitation does not stop in the hospital. Home exercise programs are developed for you to perform at home.

  • Who will be on your Cardiac Rehabilitation team?

    A group of people will be involved in your care during Cardiac Rehab. Your primary care doctor, nurse, dietician, diabetic educator, and wellness specialist.

  • Where does Cardiac Rehabilitation take place?

    Cardiac Rehab is an outpatient service that you will attend. We are located in the brand new building to the east of the hospital in the Rehabilitation & Sports Medicine Center. Parking lots for CRHC and the rehab building are shared, so just park on the east side of the lot, closest to the rehab building. 

  • Can I do Cardiac Rehabilitation at home?

    Cardiac Rehab does not only take place at the Clarinda Regional Health Center, but it is also important that you continue your program at home. You will be given exercises to do at home.

  • What does Cardiac Rehabilitation cost?

    The cost of Cardiac Rehab depends on your health insurance. Once your primary physician has referred you to Cardiac Rehab, your insurance will be contacted, and you will be notified by the Cardiopulmonary Service Personnel if you have a co-pay.

Pulmonary Rehab

Pulmonary rehabilitation is recommended for patients with certain conditions affecting the lungs, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis and lung cancer. Pulmonary programs combine education and exercise to improve lung function and decrease shortness of breath and improve quality of life. This program is supervised by our cardiac rehab personnel. PHASE II: The second phase is an exercise program after hospital discharge for those who have experienced or suffer with COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, Post COVID-19 complications or other lung events.


PHASE III: This last phase is a wellness program for those who have completed the second phase. There is a small fee for this service, as it isn’t covered by medical insurance.


Our Respiratory Therapy team works alongside pulmonary rehab patients but can also offer individualized services for patients that have experienced issues with sleep disorders, difficulties breathing or heart related problems. Respiratory therapy has many different services that can help diagnose problems and recommend treatment options. Talk to your doctor to see if any of theses services are something you could benefit from:


►     Oxygen therapy

►     Aerosol drug therapy

►     Chest physiotherapy

►     Nasotracheal suctioning

►     Intubation

►     Mechanical Ventilatory support

►     Cardiac Monitoring services such as electrocardiograms (EKG)

►     Stress testing

►     On Site Sleep studies or overnight in-home sleep studies

  • What is Pulmonary Rehabilitation?

    Pulmonary Rehab is a patient-customized program supervised by an RN that includes exercise training, education, and breathing techniques. Pulmonary Rehab is for patients that suffer from chronic lung conditions or lung problems due to other complications. Exercise programs and education is customized for every patient. Pulmonary Rehabilitation does not stop in the hospital. Home exercise programs are developed for you to perform at home.

    A group of people will be involved in your care during Pulmonary Rehab—your primary care doctor, nurse, dietician, diabetic educator, wellness specialist, and respiratory therapist.
